Join our weekly communication newsletter which Katrina says, "“Your emails are fab. Short and sweet and filled with value.” Mark told me this, "Another apt insight and approach." And Sarah said this after her first TEDx talk, "I've been enjoying reading your newsletters and finding tips and tricks that work for me"
Most information about confidence tells you to fake it, force it, or find a hack for it. At Blossoming Speaker we do something less flashy and more connected. Together we start from where you are at because:
Where and how you work, what you buy, the lifestyle you invest in, are all based on decisions from information and insights you choose to trust. Trust is the location you start to build connection.
Where you prefer to stay and invest your time, your experience, your development, your money, is greatly influenced by your sense of belonging being felt consistently. Connected communities are grown from relatability.
When you relate to who you are speaking to, you both become mutually more open, and easily want to contribute and help get things done.
Fear during change likes to keep you stuck with comfort at best, and go backwards at worst. I practice and share ways to translate what you already know into new territories because your hard earned experience doesn't disappear, it evolves.
The small, doable shifts you can return to frequently, is where the power of your lasting confidence lives, not on motivation which fades for many reasons.
Stopping to measure yourself against the old version of you is critical because you are meant to use that old version to build forward, and grow into your new possibilities.
Fear likes to network among change, and when you give it a chance, fear likes to stay stuck on you and get creative on how to build it's stronghold within you. It happens to me, but I noticed that it was harder to shake off when I was making big changes in my career or personal life. I needed to Speak Afraid because sometimes fear doesn't leave until you consistently keep going despite its presence.
You and I are currently in the midst of moving from Industry 4.0 (smart technology, automation, AI) into Industry 5.0 (human-robot collaborations, sustainability, and human centred design). It impacts the way you work, connect, your lifestyle options, and how you see yourself. In this flux of change, there will be more unknown to figure out along the way than before, and that is why I believe...
I created the Speak Afraid Method because it's a way to communicate with fear still with you in the different public settings of change, so you may create meaningful connections and keep moving forward in your journey. It is what helped me face my public speaking fear of performing stand-up comedy, it supported me when stepping into new careers, and gave me courage on my journey to become a published author.
“Change surfaces a fear within, that behaves as a weight of friction that could either slow you down to a stop, or create a traction that helps you climb.”
Speak Afraid book quote.
The Speak Afraid Method is a way to communicate through change with fear still with you, building on your confidence, so you may evolve into your new version of you, enjoy meaningful connections, and continue to move forward while saying goodbye to feeling stuck and unsure. The Speak Afraid Method is designed to:
Because change looks to keep happening, the Speak Afraid Method is built to grow with you through it each time, not just once.
Creator of the Speak Afraid Method, public speaking and confidence trainer and coach, host of the Blossoming Speaker podcast, and author of two books. I've also lived through the exact thing the work at Blossoming Speaker is built for. I've spent years helping people communicate through change, including those who:
If any of these sound like a place you are in or moving to, I am telling you, there is a way through for you that builds your confidence, grows the way you see yourself and show up, and gives you the courage to redirect fear into courage to communicate through change.
Yes, you're not the only one who has asked me this, so I placed the answers here.
Start by letting go of the idea that confidence and all the answers needs to be there before you speak. These things are built through exposure which means you need to step out and give it a go, to then find out your answers. I know through experience this is a hard habit to form especially after a corporate career where you are taught the value of an elevator pitch. Because of this being a habit, you need to break this habit by slowly (yes, with patience via a step by step approach), speaking in the transition, and then all of a sudden you realise in a moment, confidence is there with you. The Speak Afraid Method is built around this.
This is not a sign that your under prepared or not good enough for the moment. It is a message your mind gives you which says, "Please pause for a moment and give me space to get back into gear." Its mostly because your mind has hit a distraction or overload and needs the space to reset. I know it seems more logical to work harder to think about what to say or search for something to say, but this logic only overloads the system. Trust in yourself and your mind, and give it the space it is asking for. I share the micro practices I use in these moments inside the Confidence Kickstarter Kit.
It can be rebuilt at any season you are going through, and I believe it is suppose to be this way. I realise confidence simply comes from two areas, exposure to something, and the story you've told yourself about a situation. The good news is neither of those are fixed which means your confidence isn't either. Also you need your confidence to grow with you as you grow in life.
Faking it or persevering speaking in a setting that you are uncomfortable in takes, a lot of energy and mental head space away from you. Using this approach takes the average time of 6 to 12 months until you begin to feel an okay level of confidence! I believe those precious resources of yours (time, energy, confidence), deserves better, so the Blossoming Speaker methods are designed for you to speak as yourself while building your capacity and experience. It is a way that uses less energy and builds your confidence each time you speak.
Me too, at work, in front of strangers, in class groups. The ego get a hit, the feeling and isolation felt in that moment sucks, and fear likes to use that moment against you. It does this by convincing you that this bad experience defines all future moments similar to it. Well it doesn't have to. You can create a new story about that bad experience and take your learnings from it, as you use your courage to create newer experiences. My book Speak Afraid; Redirecting Fear Into Courage to Communicate Through Change, speaks to this too.
With a paradigm shift about your voice. You are not looking for a voice that is lost, that is what the word find triggers your mind to think. When going through or arriving at a career change, you need to learn ways to bring your existing voice into that new context. Afterall, your voice got you to this moment, now it is an opportunity to translate it into the new environment you are speaking in. Your voice, like your confidence, grows with you. So why not give yourself permission to let it.
It is not about overcoming, it is about embracing. Embracing who you are, your value, your unique combination of strengths, weaknesses, experiences, insights that the world needs. It is why I believe you are here right now living your life. We need you. Sounds like a heavy weight hey? I get it as I struggle with these two things and the weight of knowing I have a purpose (even though some days I feel unsure about what that purpose is). It's all normal and an expected part of our journey as we step into new careers or seasons in our life. I have spent a lot of time, money and energy, doing the work in this area, and published a book sharing the affirmations I use and my insights on how they fill my cup, help me embrace all of me, and release the hold of perfectionism and overthinking. It feels weird at first when you start seeing the positive shifts when you act on these affirmations, but then through repetition, it helped me love myself in an unconceited way, and I hope you may experience this too. The book is called, Confidence Booster; Affirmations to Reframe Your Mindset and Boost Confidence.
No and this is a good thing because you need that message signal and energy from your nerves to help you connect. What you need to learn is how to be like an orchestra conductor and direct those nervous feelings through your communication moment. Today, I still feel nervous when I am about to speak in many settings, but it doesn't stop me. I use it to celebrate as these nerves as my signal that I am growing into an experience I want to step into. Yet, I'm discovering more through my years coaching public speaking, that the messages of instinct, nerves, and fear have boundaries that blur together when you are overloaded or feeling exhausted. This is why at Blossoming Speaker, I prioritise filling your cup first because this is what creates the space for you to know the difference between your instinct and feelings, get clear on their messages, and decide how you want to conduct them. I speak on this inside my book Speak Afraid; Redirecting fear Into Courage to Communicate Through Change, and help train you on this in the Speak Afraid Community.
At Blossoming Speaker it is about giving you the flexibility of time to decide when to pop it in your existing schedule, and then give you the space to process and apply what you learn. It is easy to say to someone, you need to make a decision to do it, and then prioritise time to take action on that decision, but it left me with the questions (that I usually said in my mind in a very sarcastic way), "Yes, I know, but where and how do I start?" or "How do I keep going when life happens?" I speak more about my perspective shift on this inside my book, Speak Afraid. Blossoming Speaker topics and methods of delivery are designed to help you start, and continue after a pause. With a focus to be concise, specific, with most resources delivered on audio, and some coaching services also include a messaging app.
A way of approaching communication and confidence that guides you on how to speak up and show up with fear still present. Many say do it afraid, face your fear, I struggled to find a simple method to help me do this when the pressure of change or fear was really high. That is why I created the Speak Afraid Method. After research and practice, it is what helps me and clients to keep going and discover how to speak afraid and as themselves. Designed to meet you where you are, works with what you already know, and to be revisited as you continue to go through different seasons of your career and life.
You who are navigating professional or personal transition, like a promotion, career change, a new business, return after time away, new versions of themselves, and want to communicate with a calm presence. You don't want to start from scratch but rather learn how to carry what you know into where you are going so when you speak, it sounds like a confident you, even though you are still finding the answers for the new space you are stepping into.
"Susan has left me with an easy to implement action plan and tools I can use for future networking events. I ended the event knowing how to connect with people on a more authentic level and felt so much more comfortable approaching people." Sabrina Müller, Founder, Koala Dreaming.
"Susan helped me prepare for my Tedx talk and was a pleasure to work with. She is a great listener which is a rare talent and she gave me space to explore my speaking style. She challenged me with good intention and was an absolute pleasure to work with." Melo Calarco, Mindfulness and High Performance Coach.
"Susan was incredible at providing great practical tips and was both kind and generous in heaping praise and constructive feedback equally but without it feeling measured or contrived. I love her authenticity and value her insights." Karen Tisdell, LinkedIn Speaker and Strategist.
"Susan guided me on how I can use my mindset and visualisation to prepare for talks, also ways to look for and create speaking opportunities. I am happy to say, it led me to an opportunity to lead a leadership session at my company summit." Paula Tocquer, APAC Commercial Senior Account Partner.
